I have recently accepted an assignment as Project Director and Senior Trade
Economist, for the European Commission-funded Trade Capacity Building
Programme in Ethiopia. The EURO 5 million programme of assistance over a
period of four years seeks to help Ethiopia build its trade negotiating and analytical
capacity generally, with specific emphasis on WTO accession; EPA negotiations
and regional integration in the COMESA and IGAD sub-regions.

The overriding objectives of this site are twofold. First, to share information as it
emerges within the field of international trade and economic negotiations,
particularly within the World Trade Organization (WTO), and key bilateral trade
negotiations like the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) that developing
countries, especially those of the Caribbean Region and Eastern and Southern
Africa are currently engaged in, with the European Union (EU). Second, to provide a
platform for communication and exchange with like-minded individuals in the
pursuit of long-term, workable solutions to the problems of developing countries,
especially their integration into the world economy.

Finding a solution to the economic problems of developing countries is not easy
but in my view remains an attainable challenge. My contributions in that regard have
focused on several methods including, but not limited to: research and publication
of empirical work; public lectures; speaking engagements; participation in
international conferences and seminars and development of policy briefs.
